Chapter 9

The Power of Your Mind

On ATV television back in the early 1960s on a Saturday afternoon, there was a lady astrologer who had a five- minute slot just before the early evening news called “Fun with the Stars”. She always signed off with her catch phrase: “Think lucky and you’ll be lucky!” It’s a pretty good guess that Evadne Price practiced what she preached; she had a fantastic career as a magazine and newspaper columnist for more than six decades, published hundreds of books, wrote screenplays for films, was an international TV broadcaster and lived until she was ninety-six years old. Since Evadne’s day, there have been countless works detailing the power of positive thinking.

In its simplest form, in the context of everyday life, having a positive outlook is preferable to having a negative one. The greatest discoveries and inventions of mankind were never found by some hapless, negative, Victor Meldrew- type character who never aimed to succeed at anything except getting two feet in his grave! Even the cells in our bodies, as discovered by the Nobel Prize winning Medical Physiologists Elizabeth Blackburn and Carol Greider in their work on telomeres, respond to a positive disposition and appear to slow down the ageing process.

This phenomenon is at the heart of this book. The mind- body connection. How positive and negative dispositions not only affect your mental health, but your physical health, too. The power of the mind can be harnessed to change your beliefs and to change negative thoughts into positive ones. This can change your health and your life! How do I know? Because I’ve done it!
